Exercise Primes the Brain for Learning
I am always amazed when I read these studies that they need to be done at all! But I’m glad someone is out there, proving once again the vast benefits on the brain that exercise conveys, in children and adults. This article, from Edutopia, will provide all the details if you’re interested in more…. Whether you read it or not – encourage your kids to go out and PLAY!

Heather, I will never forget taking the GRE in college. I got to bed early the night before, woke up around 6:00, went for a run in Historic SMC, showered, went to breakfast, and arrived with plenty of time for the test start. I felt super-sharp the whole way through the test, and was thrilled with my scores when I got them. Ever since, I’ve seen that experience as proof of what I had already suspected: that the whole body participates in intellectual performance.
When I was at SMC and taking Logic, I’d get stuck on problems, and I’d go run around the track until I had them worked out. It always worked! And when I taught 4th grade, I was lucky enough to have a classroom right by the school’s track. I’d send the kids out pretty often to do a quick 4-5 laps before we hunkered down. There’s a great book called
Teaching with the Brain in Mind
– sold through ASCD. Talks about stuff like that.
