Our Story
One of my favorite things to do as an educator is to empower parents. In my very first year teaching, I held a parent night ahead of our school’s standardized performance assessments to make sure parents were comfortable with and understood the assessments their kids would be undertaking. Teaching them about how they could best help their kids study made them feel more empowered.
Once I had my own children and stepped away from the classroom, it was a perfect opportunity to branch out and continue to empower parents who wanted to help their kids learn. I associated myself with a local parenting center, and with a local university doing community outreach courses. I gave seminars for parents on school readiness, learning to read, learning to write, learning styles, and more. They were successful and I had many repeat ’students.’ One obstacle was common to nearly all the parents who I spoke with, however: the ability to get to class – especially the ones scheduled by the university as having three or four sessions! Busy parents of young children simply had trouble getting away to attend class.
So, here we are in 2009 and technology has caught up with these parents’ needs. I founded Roots of Learning where I can offer the content of my courses online, and where parents can purchase them at a fraction of the cost charged at a college or learning center. When a parent purchases an e-course, they receive the file instantly, and can begin working immediately, or save it for later. Power on – moms and dads!
